Sportingbet cashback: what exists and what does not

At the time of writing Sportingbet UK runs no permanent cashback that returns a percentage of your losses as cash. The closest product is the Back Up Bet: lose a qualifying bet and a share of the stake returns as a FreeBet, within a cap.

The short answer

Cashback, in the usual sense, means a fixed share of net losses paid back to you as withdrawable money over a week or a month. Sportingbet's UK help centre does not describe any standing scheme like that, and the Offers page does not show one to logged-out visitors. If a third-party site advertises "Sportingbet 10% cashback" as a permanent feature, treat it with caution and check the Offers tab in your own account.

What Sportingbet does use is the Back Up Bet: a token that turns a losing bet into a partial refund. It works differently from cashback, and the differences matter when you work out what it is worth.

How a Back Up Bet works

The mechanics, as set out in Sportingbet's help pages:

The help centre's own illustration uses a 50% Back Up Bet capped at 100. A stake of 80 loses, and 50% of 80 comes back, so you receive a FreeBet of 40. On a UK account read those figures as pounds: an £80 losing bet returns a £40 FreeBet. Had the stake been £300, the refund would stop at the cap of £100, not £150.

Back Up Bet versus true cashback

Cashback (typical meaning) Sportingbet Back Up Bet
Paid as Cash FreeBet
Based on Net losses over a period One qualifying bet
Opt-in needed Varies Yes
Bet types Usually any Singles and multiples only; system bets and Build A Bet excluded
Expiry Rare FreeBet has an expiry shown on screen
Value of £40 refund £40 Depends on what the FreeBet wins

The table hides the main point, which is value. £40 in cash is £40. A £40 FreeBet only pays the net winnings, because the stake is not returned. Use it at 2/1 (3.00) and a winner pays £80 (£120 minus the £40 stake). Lose it, and the refund is worth nothing. On average a FreeBet is worth noticeably less than its face value, and the shorter the odds you choose, the smaller the expected return.

Where you are most likely to meet one

According to third-party UK reviews at the time of writing, the welcome package for new customers includes an In-Play Challenge: a £10+ in-play single at odds of at least 1/2 (1.50) earns a 50% Back-Up Bet token. Sources disagree on the cap, so check the figure in Offers before relying on it. The full sign-up structure is covered on the welcome bonus page.

Existing customers may also see Back Up Bets as personalised offers in the Sports tab, with no fixed schedule.

What stops a Back Up Bet from paying

Most refunds that never arrive come down to one of these:

Refunds are normally credited within 7 days unless the offer states otherwise; More Info is the final word.

Keeping it in proportion

A partial refund on a loss can make a bet feel safer than it is. The stake is still at risk, and the refund is a FreeBet, not money back. If you notice yourself chasing losses because a refund is on offer, set a deposit limit or take a time-out, and the National Gambling Helpline run by GamCare is free on 0808 8020 133.

Frequently asked questions

Does Sportingbet have cashback?

Not as a standing cashback on losses, according to its UK help centre and offers at the time of writing. What it does have is the Back Up Bet, a FreeBet refund on a losing qualifying bet, limited by a percentage and a cap.

Is a Back Up Bet refund paid in cash?

No, the refund is a FreeBet. Should it win, the net winnings land as cash with no wagering; the FreeBet stake is not paid back.

How much do I get back if my bet loses?

The percentage and cap are set in each offer. Sportingbet's own example is a 50% Back Up Bet capped at 100: a losing stake of 80 returns a FreeBet of 40.

Can I use a Back Up Bet on Build A Bet?

No. The cover is limited to singles and multiples, and Build A Bet and system bets fall outside it.

Can I cash out a bet covered by a Back Up Bet?

You can cash out the bet if Cash Out is offered, but you then lose the refund cover, and cashed-out bets are generally excluded from promotions.
