What a PromoCode is
The term "promo code" gets used loosely online, but in Sportingbet's help centre it has a specific meaning. A PromoCode is a 12-digit code that represents betting credit you have earned from a promotion or competition. Think of it as a voucher already loaded with value: the code does not create an offer, it delivers one you have qualified for.
That distinction explains most of the confusion around the term. A PromoCode is not needed to join Sportingbet, and at the time of writing (October 2026) the welcome offer uses an opt-in rather than any code — our bonus code page covers that question in detail. PromoCodes belong to the life of an existing account.
Redeeming a code in the cashier
The process sits in the cashier rather than the bet slip, which surprises people the first time.
- Log in and open the cashier, as if you were about to deposit.
- From the list of payment methods, choose PromoCode.
- Enter the twelve digits exactly as issued.
- Press Submit.
The credit then appears in your account in whichever form the campaign specified. No deposit is taken during this process; you are using the cashier only because that is where the PromoCode method lives.
What the credit can turn into
According to the help centre, a PromoCode can be paid as balance, as a bonus or as a FreeBet. Each behaves differently, so it is worth checking which one you received.
| Credited as | How it behaves | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Balance | Added to your account balance | Any conditions are set out with the campaign |
| Bonus | Bonus funds with a wagering requirement, capped at 10x in the UK since 19 January 2026 | Winnings stay restricted until wagering is met; withdrawing early can void the bonus |
| FreeBet | A stake you do not pay for; net winnings paid as cash | Usable pre-match and live, but not on multiples; no Cash Out |
If the credit arrives as a casino bonus, the Standard Promotional Terms add a £2 maximum stake per spin or hand while you play with it. How restricted funds work in general — what is locked, what is not, and how wagering is counted — is set out in our bonus funds guide.
The multiples restriction
This is the rule that catches most people. PromoCode FreeBets can be placed on pre-match and live markets, but they cannot be used on multiples. An accumulator, a double or a treble will not accept the FreeBet, even though ordinary FreeBets from other promotions often can go on multiples.
So a PromoCode FreeBet belongs on a single. The general FreeBet rules apply on top: it must be used in full in one go, it cannot go on a system bet, it cannot be cashed out, and the payout is net winnings only. On Sportingbet's own example, a £5 FreeBet at 2.50 returns £7.50, not £12.50. Our free bet page goes through the rest of the FreeBet mechanics.
Where PromoCodes come from
Codes are issued by Sportingbet in connection with its campaigns. The help centre names promotions and competitions as the sources: when the prize in one of them is betting credit, a PromoCode is how it is handed over.
Delivery depends on how you hear from Sportingbet. Many campaign messages arrive by email, so an account with email marketing switched off may never receive them. If you want to be sent codes, check that your marketing preferences allow it; if you would rather not be contacted, the trade-off is that you will miss code-based campaigns. Either way, personalised offers for existing customers also appear under the Offers tab once you are logged in — our guide for existing players covers what typically shows up there.
A code that arrives any other way — on a forum, a coupon site or through a stranger's message — did not come from a campaign you joined, and the safest assumption is that it will not work.
One code per campaign, one use per code
Two limits apply to every PromoCode:
- Single use. Once redeemed, the code is spent. Entering it a second time does nothing.
- One per campaign. You cannot collect several codes from the same campaign and redeem them all on one account.
These limits are separate from the welcome offer rule that each player gets only one sign up offer. A PromoCode does not count as a sign-up promotion, but it does follow its own campaign terms, which are worth reading before you redeem.
